Description
An unusual antique 9ct gold double penknife pendant dating to 1915, individually sourced for LO Preloved.
This remarkable piece combines antique jewellery with function. The elongated 9ct gold case holds two miniature folding steel blades, with one blade opening from either end.
When closed, both blades sit neatly inside the gold case. Therefore, the piece can hang from a chain and appear almost entirely as a piece of jewellery.
One side features delicate engraved scrollwork across the gold. In contrast, the reverse has a smooth, polished finish. Together, these details give the piece a simple appearance while still showing its age and craftsmanship.
A gold suspension loop sits at one end, making it possible to wear the penknife as a pendant or add it to an antique charm collection. The loop carries a visible 9-1915 mark, which adds another fascinating period detail.
Once opened, the two miniature steel blades completely change the appearance of the piece. In particular, the aged steel creates a beautiful contrast against the warm tone of the gold case.
Although small in scale, the penknife has a surprising amount of detail. The maker designed it as both a decorative object and a functional miniature. As a result, it sits somewhere between jewellery, craftsmanship and social history.
The slim shape also makes it particularly wearable. From a distance, it has the appearance of an understated gold pendant. However, the engraved case and concealed blades reveal much more on closer inspection.
Antique functional jewellery has a charm entirely of its own. Moreover, pieces like this offer a glimpse into a time when miniature everyday objects could also become personal adornments.
A wonderfully unusual addition to a collection of antique gold, miniature objects or curious jewellery.
